Umstail, one of the largest listed companies for iron and building materials production in the region, announced a collaboration with the UAE Nuclear Energy Company to reduce carbon emissions in steel production using nuclear electricity certified under the I‑REC Clean Energy Certificates program in Abu Dhabi, overseen by the UAE Water & Electricity Authority.
By adopting clean energy certificates generated by nuclear power, Umstail obtains clean electricity that directly cuts stage‑two emissions and lowers the overall carbon footprint of steel production in the UAE. The move makes Umstail the first regional steel producer to use nuclear‑based clean energy certificates, reflecting its commitment to innovation and responsibility in a sector that faces the greatest emission challenges.
Currently, 86 % of the electricity used in steel production is clean, while 14 % is used for cement manufacturing. Umstail targets 100 % clean electricity by 2030.
CEO Saeed Ghamran Al‑Rimithi said: "Our partnership with the UAE Nuclear Energy Company strengthens our clean‑energy portfolio and supports our long‑term strategy to increase low‑carbon steel production. It confirms that national partnerships can accelerate industrial transformation and cement the UAE’s position as a global leader in sustainable manufacturing."
Mohammed Al‑Hammadi, Managing Director and CEO of the UAE Nuclear Energy Company, added: "This collaboration highlights the real value of transitioning to clean energy by providing industrial sectors with reliable, traceable power backed by certificates, while maintaining grid stability."
Braka nuclear power plants, developed and owned by the UAE Nuclear Energy Company, generate about 40 TWh per year, covering up to 25 % of the country’s electricity demand and helping to cut 22.4 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually.
