UAE Solidifies Position as Global Clean Energy Hub

The United Arab Emirates is solidifying its position as a global hub for clean energy investment, spreading sustainability solutions through a package of projects announced for funding and implementation throughout 2026 by several national specialized companies in this field. These projects reflect the UAE's commitment to providing sustainable and reliable solutions to global energy challenges. The map of announced projects spans the most populous continents (Asia, Africa, and Europe), enhancing their economic return and positive environmental impact by reducing carbon emissions and addressing climate change challenges. In January 2026, the UAE adopted the Federal Government's Guide to Sustainable Digital Services, aimed at adopting renewable energy, leveraging advanced technologies like artificial intelligence and cloud computing, and employing environmentally friendly practices in IT operations. The Abu Dhabi Department of Energy, during the 2026 World Governments Summit, launched the policy for self-sufficiency in photovoltaic (solar) energy, which allows for the use of smart and flexible solutions to generate, store, and consume clean energy. This policy enables the agricultural sector, farm owners, and landowners in Abu Dhabi to rely on renewable energy sources, supporting the emirate's goals of transitioning to a sustainable and efficient energy system. Masdar, in turn, announced its collaboration with the globally trusted company Elite Agro in agriculture, food production, and development, to launch the first agro-photovoltaic solar project in the Middle East and North Africa region. The project, located on the company's Al-Fuahah farm in Al Ain, Abu Dhabi, will serve as a model applicable on a wide scale in sustainable agriculture and integrating renewable energy solutions in the region. At this time, the UAE's cumulative renewable energy capacity has exceeded 7.7 GW, with 'under implementation' projects set to increase the total capacity to over 23 GW by 2031. The country's renewable energy capacity grew by 117% between 2022 and 2025, reflecting the effectiveness of national policies and the accelerated implementation of strategic projects aimed at building a more sustainable and efficient energy system. Globally, Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company Masdar embodies the UAE's leadership in clean energy. Its total investment portfolio reached 65 GW as of last January, as part of its path to achieving a 100 GW target by 2030. In 2026, Masdar launched global strategic projects, the most prominent being the development of the 150 MW Kuibungo Solar Project in Angola under the Royal Sunblest program. This project contributes to grid stability, supports sustainable development, and serves about 300,000 homes, creating over 2,000 jobs. Masdar also completed the financial close of the 300 MW Guzar Solar Project in Uzbekistan, accompanied by a 75 MWh battery energy storage system, as part of international investments exceeding $2 billion. Masdar signed a Memorandum of Understanding with RWE aimed at enhancing the reliance on renewable energy sources and developing the energy system in Germany and across Europe. The companies will continue to invest and explore opportunities in battery energy storage systems in Germany. Masdar is also exploring investment opportunities in RWE's existing and owned battery energy storage projects in Germany, with a target to reach 1 GW of capacity by 2030, alongside exploring cooperation opportunities to develop battery energy storage systems with a capacity of up to 1 GW by 2035. Furthermore, Masdar and TotalEnergies signed a binding agreement to establish a 50/50 partnership valued at $2.2 billion. Under this partnership, the companies will merge their renewable energy ground projects across nine countries in Asia. Concurrently with Masdar's activities, Global South Utilities, a subsidiary of Resources Investment, is enhancing the UAE's presence in the clean energy sector internationally and regionally through innovative projects that contribute to the global energy transition. The company announced the launch of a 5 MW solar power plant in the city of Berbera in the Horn of Africa as part of the 'Green Berbera' vision, which aims to transition from diesel dependency to a renewable energy system supported by storage solutions to ensure clean electricity for hundreds of homes and economic activities, reduce carbon emissions, and enhance energy security in the region. Global South entered into a strategic industrial partnership with the Chinese company Weihing, a global manufacturer of battery energy storage systems, to locally manufacture advanced clean energy technologies in Abu Dhabi, supporting the UAE's industrial development and energy transition efforts, and strengthening supply chains for markets in the Global South.
