At the hospital "Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi," part of the "M42" group, the first operation for the transplantation of two kidneys to a 78-year-old patient from the Emirates was successfully conducted in the UAE. The patient was in the final stage of renal failure and had to undergo a hemodialysis procedure for three years.
The operation included the transplantation of two kidneys because one kidney, which the donor provided, on its own could not ensure all necessary functions. This differs from the traditional method of transplanting a kidney, where usually only one organ is transplanted.
"This is a significant achievement in healthcare at the regional level," the hospital noted.
