The Formula 1 World Championship will be decided this Sunday at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Dutch driver Max Verstappen (Red Bull) could equal the record of Argentine legend Juan Manuel Fangio.
Verstappen, who has been champion for the last four years, needs to win and for British driver Lando Norris (McLaren) to finish at least fourth, which would allow him to complete one of the greatest comebacks in history.
If this scenario unfolds, Verstappen would secure his fifth title and equal Fangio's record, who was champion in 1951, 1954, 1955, 1956, and 1957, and also surpass legends like Frenchman Alain Prost and German Sebastian Vettel.
In this way, Verstappen would be just two titles away from the category's all-time winners, Briton Lewis Hamilton (2008, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020) and German Michael Schumacher (1994, 1995, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004), who each have seven titles.
Verstappen's first championship in Formula 1 came in 2021, when he famously overtook Hamilton in the final lap of the Abu Dhabi GP to claim the title after one of the most exciting finishes in history.
In the following years, from 2022 to 2024, Verstappen demonstrated near-total dominance to cement his legacy.
This 2025 season was not easy for the Dutchman. With a significantly inferior Red Bull, he fought hard against the McLarens of British driver Lando Norris and Australian Oscar Piastri. He was even more than 100 points behind the leader at one point, but thanks to his impressive results in the final races, he managed to close the gap significantly.
