The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai has completed 40% of the project for the modernization of the existing Nol payment system to a digital platform based on accounting records. The total cost of the initiative amounts to 550 million dirhams, and it is aimed at modernizing payments for public transport through the development of an existing card and the implementation of new technologies in line with global trends in the field of financial technologies.
This upgrade ensures numerous advantages for passengers, such as the ability to link Nol cards with digital wallets, purchase tickets using QR codes, and apply flexible tariff systems in public transport. Users will also be able to manage their accounts more effectively, monitor balances, and restore lost balances.
It is expected that the complete transition to the updated system will be completed by the third quarter of 2026. Matar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, noted that the project is being implemented in three phases. In the first phase, the central system will be modernized to create accounting records for clients that will be digitally linked to all Nol cards currently in use. Al Tayer said that in the second phase a new version of the Nol card will be released, utilizing new technologies, compatible with banking card technologies. In the third phase, the system will be enhanced to accept alternative payment methods, such as banking cards and digital wallets, for paying tariffs for public transport in Dubai.
