European Commission unveils plan for high-speed rail network development

The European Commission has announced a new comprehensive package in the transport sector, including an action plan to accelerate the development of a high-speed rail network across Europe. The plan aims to cut travel time between major cities in half by 2040 by building new lines and upgrading existing ones. Trains will reach speeds of at least 200 kilometers per hour. Passengers will be able to travel from Berlin to Copenhagen in four hours instead of seven, and the journey time from Sofia to Athens will be reduced from 13 hours and 40 minutes to six hours. Vienna and Berlin are also set to be connected by a route that will take four and a half hours, compared to the current eight hours and 10 minutes.
