Emirates Global Aluminium and Sinstone to Build Carbon Anode Plant in UAE

Emirates Global Aluminium and Sinstone, the world's largest independent producer of anodes, have announced the start of construction of a carbon anode manufacturing project in the UAE next year. The plant will have an annual production capacity of 300,000 tons of anodes, replacing most of Emirates Global Aluminium's anode imports, with production expected to begin in 2028. The project aligns with the 'Make in the UAE' initiative and the UAE's industrial growth strategy, the '300 Billion Project', reinforcing the country's position among the few nations globally that export carbon anodes. According to a statement, the two companies signed a joint venture agreement yesterday, with Emirates Global Aluminium holding 45% of the shares and Sinstone holding 55%. The investment in building the new plant is expected to be around $300 million, proportionate to each partner's ownership stake. Carbon anodes are used in the aluminum smelting process. Emirates Global Aluminium produces about 1.35 million tons of anodes annually for its operations at its plants in Jebel Ali and Taweelah, while it currently imports the rest of its requirements from abroad. Sinstone will build the plant on behalf of the joint venture, while Emirates Global Aluminium will act as a financial investor and buyer. The CEO of Emirates Global Aluminium, Abdulkarim Kalban, said: 'This project provides new opportunities to export products made in the country and to enhance our local procurement, increase our contribution to the national economy, and ensure long-term security of carbon anode supply.' He added: 'Through our partnership with Sinstone, we are leveraging our strong combined expertise in this field to establish the company's first factory outside China in the UAE. This project is a practical embodiment of the 'Make in the UAE' initiative and the industrial growth strategy, the '300 Billion Project', by converting local industrial demand into investment opportunities to develop an industrial ecosystem that drives export growth.' In turn, the Chairman of Sinstone, Lang Guanghou, said: 'We are honored to establish our company's first global expansion project in the UAE, in partnership with a leading Emirati company with over 50 years of industrial experience and a clear vision for shaping the future of the aluminum industry.' He added: 'This partnership represents a significant step for both parties in responding to the green transition in the global manufacturing sector, and we look forward to working at full capacity to set new standards for efficiency and build a solid foundation for long-term sustainable operations.'
