RAM Chip Crisis Threatens Smartphone Market

Due to limited RAM chip production, global smartphone shipments are expected to decline and prices to rise in 2026. Experts cite several key reasons for this crisis, including semiconductor shortages, supply chain disruptions, and increasing demand for high-performance devices.

RAM Chip Crisis Threatens Smartphone Market

The smartphone industry is currently experiencing a crisis related to limited production of Random Access Memory (RAM) chips. Many reports predict a decline in smartphone shipments in 2026 compared to the previous year. A technology expert told 'Emirates Today' that the RAM chip shortage crisis will become clearly apparent globally this year through a reduction in smartphone shipments, with expectations of a possible increase in the prices of modern smartphones. The crisis in the smartphone sector's RAM chips is attributed to several factors. First, a shortage of semiconductors and electronic chips, which are essential components for producing RAM chips, has significantly affected the production of many key electronic device components in recent years. Second, a scarcity of raw materials and disruptions in their supply chains have disrupted chip factories and significantly reduced production capacity. Third, there is an increasing demand for high-performance devices like foldable phones and 5G phones, which require large RAM chips to improve performance in line with these technologies. Fourth, the growing reliance on heavy applications, AI technologies, and high-end games requires more RAM chips, as smart devices depend on them for their operations. Fifth, the emergence of new memory technologies like dynamic random-access memory and wide I/O memory requires more complex chip manufacturing, increasing the demand for raw materials and production capacity. International technology sector reports predict a decline in smartphone shipments in 2026, driven by a surge in demand for memory chips. This may make it difficult for companies to obtain the precise components needed to produce smartphones, affecting production plans and potentially forcing them to cut production or restructure their strategies. Due to these factors, reports expect varying impacts on smartphone prices in general. High-end phones use large memory chips, while mid-range and budget phones use different chips to improve performance. Therefore, manufacturers face increased costs to produce these chips. Technology expert Fadi Abu Shamat told 'Emirates Today' that 'the RAM chip shortage crisis will directly impact the smartphone sector,' noting that 'the effects of the crisis will be more pronounced and clearer on the (mid-range) and (budget) phone categories, as the price increase percentages will be more impactful on consumers compared to high-end phone categories'. Meanwhile, IT technology expert Jess Kim said, 'The RAM chip shortage crisis will become clearly apparent globally this year through a reduction in smartphone shipments compared to last year, in addition to expectations of a possible increase in the prices of modern smartphones by varying percentages, resulting from increased production costs through these chips'.
