'Network Rail' confirmed that the railway line was fully reopened around 02:00 GMT, urging people to 'think about the serious impact it could have' before creating or sharing deceptive photos.

A company spokesperson stated: 'The disruption caused by creating and sharing such deceptive photos and videos causes completely unnecessary delays for passengers, at taxpayers' expense.'

British Transport Police said they had been 'notified' of the situation, but no investigation is underway into the incident.

The railway company, in turn, announced that 32 services, including passenger and freight trains, were delayed due to a hoax.

A company spokesperson said that a mix of passenger and freight trains would be affected.

They added that some would be stopped or slowed during track inspections, but many trains were delayed as a result of previous trains being on their path.

Train services were halted after a photo, allegedly generated by artificial intelligence, showing severe damage to a bridge used by passenger and freight trains, appeared on social media following an earthquake.

The earthquake, which struck last Wednesday evening, was felt across Lancashire and the southern Lake District area.

'Network Rail' reported being notified of a photo showing significant damage to Carlisle Bridge in Lancaster at 00:30 GMT, leading to the suspension of railway services over the bridge while safety inspections were carried out.

A BBC journalist showed the image to an AI-powered chatbot, which identified key locations that had likely been manipulated.
