The Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture) has unveiled the art installation 'Roots,' part of the Public Art Strategy aimed at transforming Dubai into an open, accessible global art gallery. This initiative enriches the local creative scene, reflects the emirate's appeal and social development, and reinforces its status as a global hub for the creative economy. 'Roots' is a significant addition to Mercato Beach in Jumeirah, an area known for its rich visual and natural character. The installation, created by Emirati artist Aza Al Qubaisi, draws inspiration from the patterns of palm tree trunks, a symbol of life and continuity historically known as 'the fabric of life.' Throughout history, palms have been a source of food, a pillar of life, and a fundamental material for traditional construction. Through this work, the artist engages in a visual dialogue with nature, finding rhythm in the movement of air and the recurring patterns it creates in the natural landscape, seen in the ripples of sand, the flow of waves, and the flight paths of birds. Shamma Rashid Al Suwaidi, Executive Director of Arts, Design, and Literature at Dubai Culture, stated: 'Art is a cornerstone in shaping the local cultural landscape, contributing to the enhancement of quality of life and reinforcing culture's role as an influential force in sustainable development. This aligns with the Authority's commitment to fostering a cultural environment that supports creative individuals and stimulates innovation, while also fostering the growth of cultural and creative industries.' She added: 'Through our public art projects, Dubai Culture continues to develop Dubai's urban spaces, transforming them into interactive, vibrant areas that offer the public the chance to engage with art as a daily, living experience. The Authority's initiatives aim to open wide avenues for artists and talented individuals to express their visions in contemporary ways and to create unique artistic experiences that redefine the relationship between people and place. This is embodied in the 'Roots' installation, which highlights the essence of Dubai and its cultural, natural, and historical diversity, reflecting its creative potential and unique tourism offerings, and solidifying its status as a global center for culture, a cradle of creativity, and a meeting point for talent.' Meanwhile, artist Aza Al Qubaisi confirmed that 'Roots' reflects Dubai's spirit and vitality and embodies the depth of the human connection to place. She said: 'Public art works are of great importance to current and future generations for their ability to shape visual memory and beautify public spaces. This is evident in 'Roots,' which expresses our national identity and cultural heritage. The materials and colors used in the work carry multiple meanings; the stainless steel symbolizes the present and future with its reflective properties, while the part made from palm fibers, with its earthy, rust-like tones, conveys meanings of stability and connection to the earth.' She continued: 'Choosing Jumeirah Beach as the location for the work was a great source of inspiration. The piece finds its true presence specifically in this place. When you pass under it and face the sea, nature reveals its full beauty, while the other side reveals a panoramic view of the entire city, where Dubai—with its urban skyline and Burj Khalifa—is reflected within the artwork, creating a visual experience that unites nature and the city in a single frame.'
