Experts have warned that ultra-processed foods are the main cause of a 'pandemic of diet-related chronic diseases', as food companies prioritize profits above all else. According to the British PA Media news agency, 43 scientists and researchers wrote in the medical journal The Lancet that ultra-processed foods are 'replacing' fresh foods and meals, leading to a deterioration in food quality, and are linked to a number of chronic diseases. The researchers said: 'The main reason for the global rise of ultra-processed foods is the economic and political power of the ultra-processed food sector, which has been restructuring food systems for profitability above all else.' Ultra-processed foods are linked to poor health, including an increased risk of obesity, heart disease, cancer, and premature death. It is noted that ultra-processed foods often contain high levels of saturated fats, salt, sugar, and additives, leading experts to believe that this leaves little room for more nutritious foods in a person's diet.
