417 Million Children Worldwide Affected by Poverty: UNICEF

UNICEF reported yesterday that poverty is harming 417 million children worldwide, especially in low- and middle-income countries, who are severely deprived in areas including education, health, and nutrition. The UNICEF report stated that children in sub-Saharan Africa were the most affected, noting that deprivation rates in South and Southeast Asia, as well as the Pacific, are also extremely high. UNICEF said that the 'significant progress' made this century so far in combating child poverty is at risk, as governments worldwide have reduced funding for crucial development cooperation and humanitarian aid. The report added: 'Climate change and conflict threaten to push more families into poverty.' UNICEF reported that 412 million children worldwide are affected by monetary poverty, meaning they live on three dollars a day, but this is 'only part of the story.'
