Link Between Dominant Hand and Heart Position Explains Why Most People Are Right-Handed

An international team of anthropologists has revealed a fascinating link between a person's dominant hand and the position of the heart in the body, which partially explains why right-handers make up about 90% of the world's population, while left-handers remain a minority. The 'fight hypothesis' has been known for decades as an explanation for the persistence of left-handers due to their advantage in surprise attacks, yet it has not answered the fundamental question: why do most people remain right-handed? A recent study, led by Paul Rodway from the University of Chester, proposes a new hypothesis linking the dominant hand to the asymmetrical structure of the human body. Researchers point out that the heart's location in the left side of the chest gives right-handers a significant advantage when fighting with melee weapons, as the strike's trajectory tends to hit the opponent's more lethal left side, whereas a left-hander strikes the less threatening right side.
