Dubai Warns of Deepfake Risks on Social Media

Dubai Digital has warned about the risks of 'deepfaking' on social media, which relies on artificial intelligence to forge visual and audio content in a way that is difficult to detect. Through its official account on social media platforms, it urged users to maintain a high level of digital awareness, emphasizing the need to adhere to cybersecurity standards and not to rush to believe or share any videos before verifying their authenticity and source. The authority explained that the rapid development of artificial intelligence technologies has made it easy to forge sound and images with high precision, which compels users of digital platforms to realize that what is being circulated is not necessarily real, even if it appears convincing. They added that deepfake technologies allow for the imitation of any person, in any language and with any appearance, which increases the danger of the spread of misleading information, stressing the need not to trust any visual content before verifying it and to follow an aware digital behavior that ensures safe handling of such materials. Furthermore, Dubai Digital highlighted the importance of users being sufficiently aware of methods to verify the authenticity of content and to exercise caution when dealing with any videos that may not be real according to digital safety standards. In a related context, in collaboration with the National Media Council, Dubai Digital indicated through a produced video clip that the visual or audio content circulating on social media cannot always be considered real, which necessitates verification and scrutiny before interacting with or sharing it.
