One of the specialists shared advice on how to avoid tooth damage from using mouthwash, emphasizing the importance of the correct timing of application. Caitlin Miller, head of hygiene and treatment at Bupa Dental Care, explained that mouthwash usually contains lower amounts of fluoride compared to toothpaste, which may lead to a reduction in the effectiveness of fluoride in the mouth if it is used immediately after brushing teeth. "You should refrain from using mouthwash for at least 30 minutes after brushing your teeth, as this can rinse away the beneficial fluoride left from the toothpaste," Miller told the "Mirror" magazine.
Mouthwash helps reduce the plaque of harmful bacteria, which contributes to strengthening teeth and provides fresher breath. Therefore, if it is not possible to brush teeth, mouthwash with fluoride can serve as a good alternative.
When choosing a suitable mouthwash, Caitlin recommends consulting with a dentist and using it at a different time than brushing.
Moreover, she pointed out the need to allow at least 30 minutes before using any mouthwash with chlorine, to avoid stains on teeth.
Nonetheless, these suggestions do not mean that mouthwash should be completely excluded. Caitlin advises using it when necessary, for example, when wearing braces or having issues like unpleasant odors from the mouth or problems with dentures.
Miller explained that mouthwash helps clean affected areas and reduces bacterial buildup. Using mouthwash specifically designed for denture issues, such as Corsodyl, may also be beneficial in cases of wisdom teeth problems. For instance, it is recommended to use mouthwash with high fluoride content for those who wear braces, or a type of mouthwash like CB12 for dealing with unpleasant odors from the mouth.
