On Monday, the European Council decided to suspend parts of the agreement on the visa-free regime between the European Union. Representatives of EU member states made this decision due to the disregard for democracy and human rights in certain countries, with which the mentioned agreements are concluded.
Nevertheless, within the existing agreements on the visa-free regime, measures will be taken to ensure that they do not undermine the values and rights on which the European Union is based. Specific measures may include the suspension of certain conditions or restrictions for certain categories of individuals or citizens from the mentioned countries.
"We must protect the values on which the European Union is based. This decision sends a clear message that we have mechanisms to respond to violations of human rights and democratic principles," said the representative of the European Council. "Our goal is to ensure that the agreements on the visa-free regime are not used to undermine our fundamental values."
