EU Foreign Policy Chief Discusses Key Issues

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the European Union, Kay Kallas, stated that the EU is ready to engage in an open and honest dialogue with Turkey, but that it has a series of questions that include Turkey's increased activity in the Southern Mediterranean region. Kallas also expressed concern due to the situation regarding human rights and freedom of the press in Turkey.

"We have many problems with Turkey, but we are also interested in continuing the dialogue and working together," Kallas noted.

On the other hand, she emphasized that there are a number of serious obstacles on the path to closer cooperation between the EU and Turkey. In particular, the EU supports Greece and Cyprus in disputes over maritime territorial waters and rights to develop energy resources.

Commenting on the situation, Kallas added: "We are interested in having better relations with Turkey, but there are serious obstacles we must overcome."
