New EU Entry Rules Cause Border Delays

Visa-exempt travelers from the UK, US, and other non-EU countries must now register biometric data upon arrival, causing significant delays at European borders due to operational issues with the new EES system.

New EU Entry Rules Cause Border Delays

From January 1, 2024, visa-exempt travelers from the United Kingdom, the United States, and other non-EU countries are required to register their biometric data in dedicated kiosks upon arrival. These procedures are causing significant delays. This comes after the European Union began the gradual implementation of the Entry/Exit System (EES) last October, which imposed on third-country nationals the need to deal with new technologies at entry points to the Schengen area. A new report from the Council of European Airports (ACI Europe) states that the launch of the new 'EES' entry and exit system is causing major disruptions at European borders due to a combination of operational problems accompanying the system's deployment.
