Von der Leyen Calls on Europe to Abandon Caution

President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, called on Europe to abandon its "traditional caution" in the face of an increasingly disorderly world governed by "brute force." Speaking before the European Parliament in Strasbourg yesterday, she said: "We live today in a world governed by brute force, whether economic, military, technological or geopolitical." She pointed to the "unstable situation" in the Arctic and Greenland, the "continuous shelling" in Ukraine, and tensions in the Middle East and the Indo-Pacific region. Von der Leyen emphasized that tensions between the United States and Europe over Greenland "will only lead to encouraging" what she described as "adversaries".
