UN Peacekeepers Warn of Israeli Violations

The United Nations blue helmets have warned of serious violations of the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Syria due to the significant construction project that Israel is carrying out along the Alpha Line, which separates the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights from Syria. The UN Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) has patrolled the region since 1974 and expressed its concerns after reports emerged about the extension of the works along the border.

The construction work, which began in July, has been described as "extensive engineering activities" by UNDOF. During this work, Israel has protected its earth-moving teams with armored vehicles and battle tanks and has crossed the Alpha Line into the demilitarized zone in Syria, known as the "buffer zone," which constitutes a clear violation of the 1974 disengagement agreement.

UNDOF has pointed out that these actions may increase tensions in the region and has warned of the serious consequences that could arise from these movements. Although no violent incidents have been reported along the Alpha Line, the presence of troops and construction works could pave the way for an escalation of conflicts.

The territory in question, the Golan Heights, is a strategic area of 1,200 square kilometers dominated by both Israel and Syria. In 2019, President Donald Trump recognized Israel's sovereignty over this region, a decision that remains intact under the current administration of Joe Biden. The UN established UNDOF in 1974 to maintain peace in a 400 square kilometer demilitarized zone and to monitor the ceasefire between Israel and Syria.

Construction in the region has been a point of contention between Israel and Syria, with mutual accusations of violations of the ceasefire agreement. Recent satellite images show more than 7.5 kilometers of works along the Alpha Line, suggesting significant activity by Israel in the area.

Israel has justified the construction as defensive measures to prevent unauthorized intrusions and has pointed to violations by Syrian civilians. Despite protests from UNDOF and Syria regarding these constructions, Israel has continued with the project, raising concerns about a possible escalation of tensions in the region.
