Salah pays the price for high standards, says Liverpool boss

Liverpool manager Arne Slot believes that Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah, who is going through his worst goalless streak in the Premier League, is paying the price for his own high standards. The 33-year-old Salah has won the Premier League Golden Boot as the top scorer four times since joining 'Anfield Road' in 2017, with the last being last season when 'The Reds' won the title. Salah failed to score in nine consecutive Premier League matches, his worst-ever streak. Ahead of Saturday's home match against West Ham, Slot said: 'He has set high standards for himself, and the moment he doesn't score in a few matches, people are immediately surprised. This is the biggest compliment he can get.' Slot, whose Liverpool sits sixth in the league with 45 points, 16 points behind leaders Arsenal, added: 'We are used to Salah scoring many goals, and perhaps this is the biggest difference in his performance and involvement in matches at the moment.' He continued: 'But we also know that this has happened before. I don't know if it has happened in nine consecutive matches, but I wondered about that before when he didn't score in three or five matches, but I know that in the end he will start scoring again.' Slot pointed out that Salah is not the only forward who is not scoring as much as usual. 'The focus is on him because of everything he has done for the club, but (Frenchman) Ugo (Ekitike) and (Dutchman) Cody (Gakpo) have also not scored many goals recently either.' Since these figures are for the 2024-2025 season, which ends on May 31, they do not include Liverpool's summer spending of 450 million on players like Swedish Alexander Isak (a British transfer record), German Florian Wirtz, and Ekitike.
