Fujairah Joins UNESCO's Global Network of Learning Cities

The emirate of Fujairah has been admitted to UNESCO's Global Network of Learning Cities (GNLC), reflecting the UAE's commitment to educational development and building a knowledge-based economy. Fujairah is one of 72 new cities from 46 countries recognized for their efforts in lifelong learning.


Fujairah Joins UNESCO's Global Network of Learning Cities

UNESCO has admitted the emirate of Fujairah into its Global Network of Learning Cities (GNLC) as part of its latest expansion. Fujairah thus joins 72 cities from 46 countries recognized for their commitment to realizing the right to education for all individuals of all ages at the local level. The Global Network of Learning Cities, launched in 2013, now includes a total of 425 cities from 91 countries, collectively supporting lifelong learning opportunities for nearly 500 million people. Minister of Culture Sheikh Salem bin Khalid Al Qasimi confirmed that Fujairah's accession to the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities reflects the UAE's firm commitment to developing education, culture, and human development, and serves as proof of its strategic vision for expanding lifelong learning opportunities and building a knowledge-based economy. It also highlights the UAE's leadership's focus on empowering communities through advancing education, fostering innovation, and promoting sustainability. He stated that the Ministry of Culture supported Fujairah's nomination to the network through the National Commission for Education, Culture, and Science, aligning with UNESCO's priorities and enhancing the UAE's role as an effective actor in supporting global learning and promoting cultural exchange. He added that Fujairah's entry into the network will contribute to strengthening international cooperation, facilitating the exchange of best global practices, and reinforcing the UAE's leadership in supporting cultural dialogue and shaping a future based on knowledge and creativity. Meanwhile, Director of the Fujairah Royal Court, Mohamed Al Dhahani, said that the emirate's inclusion in the network resulted from its strategic efforts to expand and develop educational infrastructure, promote digital culture, and create community learning centers that meet modern demands. He noted that the long-term vision of His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Fujairah, and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad Al Sharqi, Crown Prince of Fujairah, aims to establish the emirate's position in the education and knowledge-based economy sectors, in line with the UAE Vision 2031 and the National Strategy for Education 2030. In a press release, Stefania Giannini, UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Education, explained that the 72 new cities joining the network are redefining learning by turning every street, library, workplace, museum, and home into a space for knowledge and innovation. They are making education a priority from early childhood to adulthood, thereby empowering individuals and opening up opportunities for everyone.
