Inshirah Program Helps UAE Publishers Become More Sustainable

Many graduates of the Sharjah Publishing Sustainability Fund (Inshirah) pathways, an initiative launched by Hissa bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Sharjah Book Authority, have stated that the training and advisory sessions provided by the fund constituted a tangible turning point for the participating publishing houses. Through the direct technical support, clear answers to professional inquiries, and practical experience from international specialists, the sessions helped enhance the efficiency of the publishing houses and improve their decision-making capabilities. Publishers explained that the continuous assistance helped them get on the right track, develop clearer financial and marketing strategies, and gain a deeper understanding of the distinction between a publishing house's cultural mission and its commercial dimension. This has boosted their readiness to adapt to the evolving publishing landscape, transition towards more sustainable and flexible business models, and open doors to expansion in regional and international markets through participation in fairs and building professional networks. This emerged from a survey conducted by the fund, under the Sharjah Book Authority, to assess the impact of the 'Inshirah' pathways based on the participants' experiences and opinions. The survey aimed to highlight how the training, mentoring, consulting, resources, and opportunities offered by the fund contribute to developing the capabilities of publishers in the UAE and empowering them to strengthen their professional and commercial presence in the sector. Founder of 'Nour for Publishing', Noor Arab, said: 'The training sessions sparked great enthusiasm in me to develop the commercial side of the publishing house. They helped me build a more sustainable and flexible business for the future.' She noted that the most prominent outcome of her experience was deepening her awareness of the difference between the 'cultural awareness' and the 'commercial face' of the publishing house and the importance of each. Dr. Asma Amara, for her part, confirmed that the greatest value she found in the program was the technical support and clear answers to every question, considering that this kind of support saves time and gives the publisher greater clarity in decision-making.
