Exhibition on Mahmoud Darwish opens in Sharjah

The exhibition «The Dice Player: Mahmoud Darwish» is an artistic and cultural journey that celebrates the legacy of the great Palestinian poet over four months, from his earliest roots in the village of al-Birwa to his eternal presence in the Arab and global memory. The exhibition does not so much reflect the chronological sequence of Darwish's biography as it embodies the transformations of his creative voice, through an interplay of word, image, and music in an expressive journey that reflects his philosophy of life as he expressed it in his works. The exhibition takes its visitors through six sections inspired by the six faces of a die, revealing the diversity of Darwish's poetic and human experience and documenting his creative milestones that shaped his exceptional career, continuing until March 13, 2026. Artist and musician Marcel Khalifa presented a distinguished musical performance, in which he sang his most famous works inspired by Darwish's poems, including «Rita» based on the poem «Rita and the Rifle», «My Mother» based on the poem «To My Mother», and «A Song on My Mind» based on the poem of the same name. His distinctive performance breathed new life into the words. Khalifa also recalled his memories with Mahmoud Darwish, especially about composing the poem «The Dove Flies», which the poet personally requested from him. Khalifa explained that he completed the composition after his passing and performed it during Darwish's memorial ceremony in tribute to his memory. Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq), honored the entities that contributed to organizing the exhibition, appreciating their role in highlighting Mahmoud Darwish's legacy and supporting the vibrant cultural scene of the Emirate of Sharjah. The exhibition brought together an elite group of partner cultural institutions, including the Palestinian Museum; the Mahmoud Darwish Foundation; the Khalil Sakakini Cultural Center; the Barghouti Foundation for the Arts; «October Gallery» from London, in addition to the official sponsor, the Sharjah Islamic Bank, and the supporting partners. The exhibition offers an interactive cultural experience that is not limited to visual documentation but uses modern audiovisual techniques, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the poetic and prose world of Mahmoud Darwish and understand the evolution of his poetic vision through the different stages of his life.
