As part of the 44th Sharjah International Book Fair, a special discussion session titled "The Female Theatrical Experience in the UAE" was held. The event was part of the "Dialogue with a Pioneer of Emirati Theatre" program and featured actress Samira Ahmed. The session was moderated by poetess Sheikha Al-Jabiri, with the participation of writer Salha Gabish in the presentation.
Gabish opened the meeting by emphasizing that the session is a continuation of a documentary project launched by the Cultural Office of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs in Sharjah. The project resulted in the book "Pioneers of Emirati Theatre" by author Zafer Jaloud, which documents the journey of women who, alongside their peers, founded a pivotal stage in the history of local theatre.
Samira Ahmed shared her extensive experience spanning both the theatre stage and television dramas. During the conversation, she recalled the beginning of her journey, speaking about the challenges faced by Emirati women entering the world of theatre. She affirmed that the path was not easy and that perseverance required a deep belief in the mission of art and genuine institutional support.
The actress highly praised the pioneering role of the Emirate of Sharjah and its National Theatre in nurturing talent and developing their abilities. She noted that the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, was the cornerstone of establishing and flourishing Emirati theatre.
Samira Ahmed also touched upon various milestones in her career, recalling periods of hiatus and return to the theatre stage. She stated that for her, art is "a responsibility, not just a presence," and that the balance between artistic work and family life was a fundamental pillar of her experience, thanks to the support from her family and artistic circle.
The actress also addressed the main challenges faced by producers, actors, and playwrights, stressing the importance of enhancing local identity in artistic texts to ensure Emirati drama remains distinctive in its content and form.
Poetess Sheikha Al-Jabri commended the contributions of Emirati actresses to solidifying the national theatrical experience, confirming that their presence has become part of the country's cultural memory. She emphasized that supporting female leadership in theatre reinforces the cultural approach that Sharjah adopts in building the human being and fostering creativity.
She pointed out that hosting actress Samira Ahmed aims to shed light on a rich experience that combines artistic commitment, human vision, and societal perspective.
As the actress observed, digital platforms and short theatrical seasons offer new opportunities, but they require a clear vision and a development strategy to ensure the sustainability of the Emirati presence on screen. Samira Ahmed expressed her hope that the new generation of female playwrights and directors will continue the legacy of female theatrical leadership in the country and present works that reflect the diversity of Emirati society and its authentic values.
