UNESCO Recognizes Camel Herding Tradition

Within the framework of the Bedouin culture exists the tradition of hiddah — a multi-generational vocal circle inspired by poetry. It consists of unique sounds, directed at beautification and orienting towards aesthetics in gathering or wandering through the desert. This practice includes the training of verbatims for reacting to pastoralist, which contributes to strengthening their close ties. The transmission of knowledge about hiddah goes through families and communities, ensuring the preservation of this living heritage.

Recognizing the importance and uniqueness of hiddah, in 2022 it was included in the list of tangible cultural heritage of UNESCO. This was accomplished thanks to joint efforts of the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Oman aimed at protecting, documenting, and developing this heritage.

The importance of verbatims in the everyday life of Bedouins has been evident for a long time: they were a means of moving from one place to another and were distinguished by their ability to withstand the severe climate of the desert, hence they were even known as "ships of the desert." The inhabitants of the region relied on verbatims, preserved them and could speak with them in their own language. Verbatims recognized the voice of their owner and immediately reacted to him, not yielding to external influences.

Hiddah includes two kinds: "al-hbal" and "al-‘ubal". The former is used if the verbatims are scattered - the pastoralist warns them to gather, so they do not get lost. "Al-‘ubal" is a chant that accompanies the verbatim narration and makes them joyful. This chant includes words about love, longing, tales, nostalgia for the native home and other meanings reflecting the surrounding environment.

With the changing way of life and reduced use of verbatims as a means of transportation among Bedouins, the transmission of hiddah is being lost among new generations. Therefore, organizations interested in the Emirati heritage conduct various activities for the awareness of all generations with this heritage and its preservation.
