United Arab Emirates. The Emirates Consumers Association has warned consumers that behind attractive prices in some retail outlets, there may be products nearing their expiration date. The association's chairman, Mohammed Al-Mehiri, stated that some promotional offers with low prices may include products that are close to expiration or have been improperly stored, making them prone to spoilage and negatively affecting consumers' health. Al-Mehiri called on local and federal regulatory authorities to intensify inspection campaigns in markets, especially during seasons and holidays when promotional offers increase, to ensure that traders comply with safety and quality standards and apply consumer protection laws. He also emphasized that consumers must be highly aware and responsible when taking advantage of low-price offers, noting that 'responsibility does not lie only with the authorities, but begins with the consumer's own awareness.' He urged the public to practice conscious buying behavior based on inspection and verification before making a purchase. Al-Mehiri advised consumers to carefully read the product card, check the expiration date and storage method, and not be swayed solely by the low price, stressing that the value lies in the product's safety and quality, as human health is priceless. He also recommended avoiding purchasing large quantities of perishable goods during sales and ensuring the product has not been exposed to high temperatures or humidity. He stressed the importance of keeping the purchase receipt as a legal right for filing complaints with the relevant authorities and to immediately report any violations or damaged goods through the dedicated consumer protection hotline (8001222). Al-Mehiri highlighted that the Federal Law No. 15 of 2020 on Consumer Protection obliges all suppliers and commercial establishments to provide goods and services that guarantee their quality and safety, and prohibits the display or sale of any expired or unfit for human consumption products. He concluded that consumer protection is a cornerstone of the sustainability of national markets, and community awareness forms the first line of defense against any irresponsible business practices.
