ADNOC Distribution has begun solar panel installations at 28 service stations in Dubai, aiming to reduce CO₂ emissions and energy costs, supporting sustainability goals.

ADNOC Launches Solar Panel Initiative in Dubai

ADNOC Distribution, in collaboration with Emerge, a joint venture between Masdar and the EDF Group, has announced the launch of the second phase of its service station solarisation programme. During the first phase of the project, solar panels were successfully installed at 28 ADNOC Distribution service stations in Dubai. These stations represented all feasible locations within the Dubai network suitable for solar panel installation. By the end of 2024, the partnership had accumulated over 6,300 MWh of electricity, resulting in a reduction of more than 2,900 tonnes of CO2 emissions.

As part of Phase 2, ADNOC Distribution and Emerge are planning to install solar panels at over 100 service stations in Abu Dhabi. It is anticipated that these solar panels will generate around 30,000 MWh of renewable energy annually. This amount of energy is sufficient to power almost one billion smartphones and help avoid over 13,000 tonnes of carbon emissions every year.

Through the solarisation programme, Emerge will be responsible for financing, designing, installing, and maintaining solar photovoltaic (PV) panels at service stations across ADNOC Distribution's UAE network. This initiative aligns with the company's sustainability objectives by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and decreasing reliance on non-renewable energy sources. Additionally, the programme aims to enhance operational efficiency by reducing energy costs and optimizing the energy mix at service stations. ADNOC Distribution aims to reduce operational carbon intensity by 25% by 2030.

ADNOC Distribution's commitment to sustainability is evident through its adoption of sustainable financing methods. The company became the first UAE fuel and convenience retailer in January 2023 to convert a $1.5 billion term loan into a sustainability-linked one. This innovative financing model links financial incentives and penalties to achieving sustainability goals such as solarisation, underscoring ADNOC Distribution's dedication to integrating sustainability throughout its operations.

Bader Saeed Al Lamki, CEO of ADNOC Distribution, emphasized the importance of bringing solar energy to Abu Dhabi service stations in partnership with Emerge. He highlighted how incorporating solar power into their energy mix is a significant step towards meeting sustainability targets and supporting broader ADNOC Group and UAE net-zero goals. Michel Abi Saab, General Manager of Emerge, expressed pride in extending the partnership with ADNOC Distribution and launching Phase 2 of the service station solarisation programme. Emerge remains committed to assisting businesses in the UAE in reducing carbon emissions and achieving their sustainability objectives.

Overall, the advancements made in the solarisation programme reflect a dedication to sustainable practices and environmental responsibility. The initiative marks a substantial step towards reducing carbon emissions and promoting renewable energy sources in the UAE.
