The Ministry of Finance announced a new strategy in the field of sustainable development, selecting polymer for the production of new banknotes. This material is more durable and sustainable than traditional paper money and is fully recyclable, which reduces its impact on the surrounding environment. On the front side of the 500 dirham note is depicted the pavilion of sustainable development "Terra" at the World Expo in Dubai, emphasizing the UAE's commitment to building a sustainable future. On the reverse side, the banknote features an image of the "Museum of the Future" in Dubai, created as an architectural and engineering masterpiece, linking the past with the future.
"We are proud to be the first country in the region to issue banknotes with advanced security features and made from environmentally clean materials," said Saif Hamid al-Zahiri, deputy head of the Central Bank. The 500 dirham note also includes images of significant landmarks, such as the "Emirates Towers" and the "Burj Khalifa," which is the tallest building in the world. The banknote also contains relief symbols for the blind and visually impaired for their identification and value assessment.
This banknote issuance is aimed at accelerating the transition to a green economy, ensuring a sustainable future development. The Central Bank of the UAE has been awarded the title "Best Banknote of 2025" in the 500 dirham category for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. The new note features a unique design that reflects the UAE's commitment to sustainable development and underscores the Central Bank's commitment to adopting sustainable financial solutions.
