The United Arab Emirates has launched an initiative for the development of sixth-generation (6G) technologies. The initiative was announced by the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority. The goal is to unify national efforts to create a single platform that will enable the country to lead in advanced communications. These achievements pave the way for a new phase where, together with partners, a national roadmap for 6G will be developed. This will mark a qualitative leap by integrating digital and cognitive worlds and leveraging artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and satellite networks to enable future applications. The Authority believes that the shift to 6G technologies will not be merely a technical evolution but a strategic step towards building a sustainable knowledge-based economy based on innovation, AI, and digital infrastructure integration. Dr. Khaled Al Awaidi stated: "This step reflects the Authority's commitment to adopting a proactive approach in shaping the future of communications and enhancing the UAE's position as a global hub for developing and applying future technologies." Through this initiative, the committee aims to develop a comprehensive national ecosystem for 6G by enhancing cooperation between national partners, establishing research and innovation programs in future communications through universities and R&D centers, accelerating the adoption of modern technology in vital sectors, and supporting the development of 6G standards to be presented to regional and international organizations. To support the main committee's tasks, two specialized subcommittees have been formed: one for Research and Development, led by Dr. Marwan Al Dabbas from Khalifa University, and another for Integration and Strategic Partnerships, led by Dr. Khaled Al Awaidi from the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority. We are building on a legacy of innovation and achievements, striving together towards a hyper-connected society that supports innovation and national prosperity. Engineer Mohamed Al Ramsi, Vice Chairman of the Board of the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority, opened the meeting, confirming that launching the 6G initiative aligns with the UAE's vision to lead the future of communications and information technology. He noted: "In 2015, we began our preparations for the fifth generation journey, which culminated in its commercial launch in 2019, making the UAE the first country in the region to achieve this milestone." The launch of the 6G committee is a pivotal milestone in the UAE's journey towards global technological leadership, as part of its continuous efforts to prepare for the post-5G era and support digital transformation and sustainable innovation initiatives. Today, we celebrate coverage of over 99.5% of populated areas and more than 23,000 5G sites, serving over 10 million subscribers.
