Emirati to Head International Nuclear Energy Center

Yesterday, Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation announced the selection of its Managing Director and CEO, Mohamed Al Hammadi, as the Chairman of the Atlantic Center, part of the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) in the United States. He thus becomes the first Arab and the first Asian to hold this position.

The mission of the World Association of Nuclear Operators is to enhance safety and operational efficiency standards in nuclear energy through its global network, which links nuclear operators and facilitates the exchange of best practices across the sector. The Atlantic Center includes members from operating companies that manage more than 100 commercial nuclear power plants in North America, in addition to a number of selected international operators, representing a strong platform for enhancing coordination and exchanging expertise.

Al Hammadi's appointment as President of the Atlantic Center by WANO highlights the international recognition of Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation's contributions to enhancing global operational excellence and its commitment to the highest international standards of quality and safety in the peaceful nuclear energy sector. Al Hammadi has played an active leadership role in WANO for over a decade, joining the Atlantic Center's Board of Directors in August 2015 and serving as the head of WANO itself from 2022 to 2024.

As a member of the Atlantic Center, which is part of WANO, Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation ensures that its operations align with the best operational practices in the US peaceful nuclear energy sector. Based on the stringent regulatory environment in the UAE and the requirements derived from the regulations of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the company is now in a position that enables it to move swiftly towards implementing joint projects with partners from the United States.

Al Hammadi stated: "This mandate reflects the level of progress achieved by Emirati expertise in the peaceful nuclear energy sector, which comes thanks to the wise directives and continuous support of our leadership. In this context, we affirm our commitment to continuing to support all our members within our ongoing efforts to achieve operational excellence in the nuclear energy sector."

He added: "The mission of WANO, centered on enhancing safety and reliability, has been the cornerstone of our operational strategy at Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation. We continue to be committed to contributing to the enhancement of the Atlantic Center's and WANO's expertise to elevate the operational excellence of peaceful nuclear power plants worldwide."
