Dubai Building One of World's Largest Seawater Desalination Plants

The Hassyan Independent Water Plant, with investments amounting to AED 33.77 billion, stands as one of the world's largest projects for seawater production using reverse osmosis technology, and it marks the first project by the Authority in the field of independent water production. Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), during his inspection of the progress on Phase 1 of the plant, confirmed that the project embodies the vision and directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President of the UAE, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, may Allah protect him. It aims to provide a modern and integrated infrastructure for energy and water that aligns with Dubai's rapid growth and meets the increasing demand for water services in line with water security policies and sustainable development plans. He highlighted that the project is part of the Authority's strategy to increase water production capacity in Dubai. The Authority is building desalination plants based on seawater reverse osmosis technology, which requires less energy than multi-stage distillation plants, making it a more sustainable option for water desalination. By 2030, the Authority will add 240 million gallons to its daily production capacity of desalinated water using seawater reverse osmosis technology, aiming to produce 100% of its desalinated water using a mix of clean energy and waste heat. Al Tayer toured various sections of the project, which serves as a cornerstone in supporting the smart infrastructure for desalinated water and enhancing the goals of the 2030 Integrated Water Resources Management Strategy. Officials from Hassyan Water Company provided detailed briefings and presentations on the project's progress. DEWA announced the completion of approximately 90% of Phase 1 of the seawater desalination plant at the Hassyan complex, noting that all phases of the plant are scheduled for completion by the first quarter of 2027.
