Chinese e-commerce platforms threaten traditional trade in UAE

The head of Al Shaikh Group warned that Shein and Temu platforms create unfair competition for local retailers, calling for new market rules.

Chinese e-commerce platforms threaten traditional trade in UAE

The CEO of Al Shaikh Group, Mohamed Abdulaziz Al Shaikh, stated that trade "may get sick but does not die," but it could be destroyed by the two Chinese e-commerce platforms, Shein and Temu. He warned that these two platforms could weaken the trade sector if their expansion continues without fair regulations. During his participation in the UAE-Kuwait Economic Forum in Dubai, Al Shaikh explained that the companies do not hire local citizens, do not rent retail spaces, and do not pay municipal taxes, while their substantial profits are transferred to China. This places traditional retailers in a position of unfair competition. He pointed out that the retail sector is not easy and requires significant investments and high operational costs, whereas e-commerce platforms enjoy extensive advantages. He called for the establishment of fair market regulations that would ensure a balance between traditional and e-commerce.
