A survey conducted by 'Emirates Today' revealed the availability of around 25 brands of liquid milk in various types. The main categories include fresh milk, long-life milk, and evaporated/condensed milk, all sourced from cows or camels. The survey showed diversity in milk products based on fat content: there are full-fat, low-fat, and fat-free products, as well as high-protein or protein- and vitamin-fortified varieties. It also highlighted the availability of long-life and lactose-free milk for those with lactose intolerance, typically priced higher. Fresh milk is sold in sizes ranging from 180ml small packs to 1-liter, 2-liter, and larger 3.78-liter packs. The difference between condensed and evaporated milk is that condensed milk contains sugar and is used for desserts, while evaporated milk has no sugar additives and is used in hot drinks or cooking. The survey also found camel milk products in various forms, plain or flavored with chocolate, cardamom, saffron, or dates, reflecting the market's effort to cater to diverse tastes. Regarding origin, there is a mix of local, Saudi, Iranian, French, Italian, Turkish, Spanish, and other European products, with Emirati products dominating the market share. Organic milk, especially fresh, is the most expensive, with some 1-liter organic packs costing around 21 AED. Specialists recommend choosing products made from fresh milk, not powdered, and considering individual health needs like fat content or lactose-free options. After opening, it must be refrigerated and used within seven days for quality and safety. Sales officials reported a over 40% increase in milk demand during Ramadan due to higher consumption in meals by various expatriate communities. Long-life milk is more popular in Ramadan due to its longer shelf life and ease of storage before opening. Milk is a rich source of high-quality protein, essential for growth and immune function. It contains amino acids that may help reduce age-related muscle loss and improve physical performance in seniors. Being rich in potassium, milk can help lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke. Milk is also linked to bone health due to its rich content of calcium, vitamin D, phosphorus, magnesium, potassium, and protein.
