Etihad Airways Expands Network in China

Etihad Airways announced a major expansion of its route network in mainland China, including the launch of five new destinations and the addition of 28 weekly flights. This step represents one of the largest increases in capacity in a single market in recent years. Under this expansion, Etihad will operate direct flights from Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi to Shanghai Pudong, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Hangzhou, and Shenzhen, bringing its total operations in China to 35 weekly flights to six destinations, including its existing daily service to Beijing Daxing. All flights will be operated on Etihad's Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, equipped with 28 seats in business class and 262 seats in economy class. This expansion, according to Etihad, reflects the growing strategic importance of the UAE-China corridor, strengthening ties in trade, tourism, and investment, and cementing Abu Dhabi's position as a global hub connecting China with the markets of the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and North America. The expansion will also boost passenger and cargo traffic between the two countries, providing greater access to leading commercial, industrial, and technological centers in China, while also enhancing connectivity in the cargo sector through key manufacturing and export hubs, supporting global supply chains and high-value trade flows. All new routes will fall under the joint cooperation agreement between Etihad and China Eastern Airlines, which strengthens the link between the UAE and China through coordinated services via main hubs, as China Eastern Airlines currently operates routes connecting Shanghai, Kunming, and Xi'an with the United Arab Emirates. This expansion also supports the cargo partnership project between Etihad and "SF Airlines", which enhances air cargo connectivity and supports the movement of goods through major trade corridors between China and global markets. His Excellency Mohammed Ali Shafarou, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Etihad Airways, stated that the relations between the UAE and China continue to flourish, and today's announcement reflects the strength of this partnership and its promising prospects. The network expansion, supported by a strong partnership with China Eastern Airlines, connects distinguished tourist destinations and growing commercial centers, achieving shared and sustainable economic prosperity that benefits our peoples. In turn, Etihad's CEO, Antonioaldo Neves, stated that China is a strategically vital market for Etihad and a cornerstone in the airline's network growth, and this expansion represents a tangible increase in capacity and a clear indication of its long-term commitment to this market. He added that by adding five new destinations and increasing flight numbers, Etihad is enhancing connectivity through one of the world's most important economic corridors, supporting the growing demand for travel and trade, opening new opportunities for cargo, business, and tourism, and at the same time reinforcing Abu Dhabi's status as a prime destination and a global gateway for travel and trade, supporting the emirate's long-term economic ambitions. Each of the five new destinations plays a pivotal role in China's economic and landscape, enhancing Etihad's ability to meet diverse needs in both passenger and air cargo sectors. Shanghai Pudong is a global financial center and a major international cargo hub, Guangzhou is a primary gateway for manufacturing and trade in Southern China, Chengdu is a fast-growing center for innovation and technology in Western China, Hangzhou is a leading center for the digital economy and e-commerce, and Shenzhen is a global force in technology and a major export market. This announcement represents a significant expansion of Etihad's presence in China and provides its customers in the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and the Americas with wider access to leading commercial and cultural centers in China via Abu Dhabi.
