In the third quarter of the current year, the production of desalinated water by Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) reached 40.5 billion gallons, which is 4.64% more than in the same period of the previous year. This was reported by the authority yesterday.
According to DEWA's statement, the "maximum daily demand" for desalinated water was 455 million gallons, which is 4.92% more to accommodate the growing demand and reflect the recent growth of Dubai.
Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, the Managing Director and CEO of DEWA, stated: "As part of our efforts to increase the production capacities for desalinated water to 735 million gallons per day by 2030, we plan to adapt to the qualitative economic growth observed in the emirate, and the sustainable developmental process, corresponding to Dubai's economic plan (D33) and Dubai's urban plan by 2040."
He added: "DEWA is focusing on the development of seawater reverse osmosis plants for desalination, as it requires less energy than conventional thermal plants, making it a more sustainable option for desalinated water production." Aiming for 100% desalinated water production by 2030, the authority intends to utilize a combination of clean energy sources, integrated renewable energy and thermal capacity.
