DWTC has launched the first phase of the Dubai Exhibition Centre (DEC) expansion at Expo City Dubai. This phase is a significant step in DWTC's growth strategy and aligns with Dubai's vision of becoming a global MICE destination. The expansion project, valued at AED10 billion, is set to make DEC the largest indoor events venue in the region upon completion by Q1 2026.
The DEC expansion will increase the exhibition space to 140,000 square meters, accommodating up to 50,000 visitors daily. Mahir Julfar, Executive Vice President at DWTC, highlighted the transformative impact of this project on Dubai's MICE sector, positioning the city as a global hub for mega events.
Renowned consultants like Mace and Egis are overseeing the first phase of the DEC expansion. The goal is to triple the sector's economic contribution to AED54 billion annually by 2033. The project aims to set new standards for sustainable exhibition venues and optimize operational efficiency.
The expanded DEC will offer enhanced flexibility for various event configurations, including top-notch digital infrastructure. It will become the primary venue for mega exhibitions, enabling Dubai to double the number of large-scale events hosted annually by 2033.
Phase 1 of the construction involves laying a foundation with 515 piles, using 14,000 tonnes of structural steel, and pouring 48,000 cubic meters of reinforced concrete. Amer Al Farsi, Acting Vice President of Real Estate Development at DWTC, emphasized that the first phase alone will double the number of events to 600 by 2033 and increase the indoor event hosting capacity to 140,000 square meters.
The expanded center will prioritize sustainability, incorporating eco-friendly design elements and aiming for LEED certification. Additionally, the development includes a dedicated parking facility and expanded marshalling yards to improve event turn-around times. DWTC's commitment to sustainability is a core aspect of the DEC expansion project.
