The UAE Writers' and Authors' Union has launched the 17th edition of the Ghaneem Ghabash Short Story Award for 2026. This initiative is one of the leading cultural programs that contribute to the art of the short story and solidify the presence of the Arabic language in the UAE's creative landscape. The award is named after the late Emirati writer and literary figure, Ghaneem Ghabash, in recognition of his prominent cultural and social contributions. Through this award, the union continues to immortalize his creative legacy and support new generations of writers. The union will accept submissions starting from January 19th until February 25th, 2026, via the award's official website http://ewu.ae/award. The winning works will be announced on Emirati Writer's Day, which falls on May 26th. Sheikha Al Jabri, Vice President of the Union's Board of Directors and General Secretary of the award, confirmed that the award represents a significant literary platform. The union is keen to encourage talented writers from the UAE, especially the youth. In this edition, the union continues to enhance the award's tracks, represented by its two categories: 'Short Story' and 'Short Story Collection'. Literary awards serve as a real catalyst for creativity, help in discovering new talents, and honing distinguished experiences. The union has allocated cash prizes for the top three winners in each category. The first-place winner in the short story category will receive 10,000 dirhams, the second-place winner 8,000 dirhams, and the third-place winner 5,000 dirhams. The first-place winner in the short story collection category will receive 15,000 dirhams, the second-place winner 10,000 dirhams, and the third-place winner 6,000 dirhams.
