The role of modern libraries as a cultural center and the necessity of transitioning to digitization and sustainability were highlighted by experts and directors of libraries at the international conference in Dubai. They noted that libraries are not just places for storing books but play a key role in the cultural sphere, hence they need to keep pace with the times, incorporating digital elements and focusing on sustainable development.
Ibrahim Al Hashimi, member of the Management Council of the Muhaimida Ben Rashid Al Maktoum Library and member of the Higher Committee of the International Dubai Conference on Libraries, presented a future model for libraries, based on the experience of a top-tier library. He emphasized that libraries have now become centers of knowledge and cultural exchange, which poses a challenge for them to transform their functions.
Dr. Emad Abu Ayd, a library specialist, proposed an innovative model for future libraries in the UAE. He stressed that libraries should provide various methods of reading, including digital formats and new forms of texts, such as short books that help youth obtain information.
On the other hand, the process of preserving manuscripts requires certain conditions, such as controlling temperature and humidity, an automatic fire extinguishing system, adequate lighting, and good insulation. This is necessary for protecting and preserving valuable documents from damage and climate influences. Manuscript processing begins with deacidification and preventive measures, followed by cleaning, restoration, digitization, and digital scanning.
All conference participants emphasized that libraries bear a multitude of responsibilities regarding the formation of cultural creation and accountability towards society.
