A study published in the journal Nature found that increasing levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere not only leads to climate change but also increases ocean acidity. This rise poses a serious threat to marine life, causing the destruction of coral reefs and disrupting ecosystems.
Ocean acidification, caused by increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, threatens organisms living in the sea. Scientists discovered that this could lead to the loss of corals, mollusks, and other marine creatures, which ultimately reflects on the entire marine food chain.
"We are seeing very serious changes in marine life due to the acidity of water caused by carbon dioxide. This could lead to the loss of biodiversity of living organisms and the degradation of the marine environment," noted one of the researchers involved in the study.
