The international non-governmental organization "Handicap International" warned about the increase of racism towards persons with disabilities. It noted that people with limited abilities are becoming victims of racism and discrimination due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The organization highlighted that persons with disabilities are more often subjected to racism, including physical, psychological, sexual, and economic abuse. The closure of educational institutions, lack of access to medical care and social services makes them more vulnerable to racism.
"The pandemic has led to a worsening situation for persons with disabilities; their victims face additional problems that aggravate already difficult living conditions," the organization emphasized. In its report, published on International Day of Persons with Disabilities, "Handicap International" called on governments to strengthen the protection of the rights of persons with limited abilities and to prevent new cases of racism.
