Foods That Disrupt Sleep Quality

Experts advise against caffeine, chocolates, and spicy foods before bedtime for better sleep quality. A healthy diet is essential for good sleep and overall health.

Foods That Disrupt Sleep Quality

Some products can affect the quality of your sleep. Dietitian Dan Gartenberg asserts that for better and healthier sleep, one should avoid certain products and drinks. Among the products containing gamma-aminobutyric acid, which helps relax and fall asleep, he notes decaffeinated tea, yogurt, cheese, and beans.

On the other hand, one should avoid consuming products that can stimulate alertness, such as coffee and tea. "Caffeine also blocks adenosine, which is responsible for the feeling of sleepiness. Therefore, it is important not to consume caffeine several hours before sleep," explained the dietitian.

Chocolate and sweets can also disrupt sleep due to high sugar content and a small amount of caffeine. Citrus products can cause a release of gastric acid, leading to heartburn and upsetting digestion, interfering with sleep.

Gartenberg also warns about the dangers of consuming spicy foods, hot peppers, and other spicy dishes before bed. They can also provoke the release of gastric acid and increase body temperature, weakening the process of cooling down the body before sleep.

Studies show that caffeine may lead to chronic sleep disorders such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disorders. According to specialists, improper diet can be one of the reasons for sleep disorders and weakened immunity. "Following a healthy diet, rich in beneficial substances, is essential for quality sleep and overall health," emphasized Gartenberg.
