Study on Differences Among Venomous Snake Species

A new study compares 36 species of venomous snakes, revealing differences in fang placement, striking speeds, and venom-injection techniques, crucial for understanding evolution and medicine.

Study on Differences Among Venomous Snake Species

To highlight the differences between species, a recent study focused on 36 species of venomous snakes belonging to three main families: Elapidae, cobras and mambas, and Colubridae, which include both non-venomous and lethal species like the tree snake. While most previous studies focused on a single species and examined the differences within the same species, such as distinguishing between 'explorers' and 'hunters,' the new study compared different species. There are approximately 600 species of venomous snakes on Earth. To the untrained eye, most of these creatures' attacks appear similar, but in reality, different species have evolved to have different fang locations, varied striking speeds, and different venom-injection techniques.
