Potato is a true treasure for skin care, as it contains soothing and nourishing properties that help to brighten, moisturize, and enhance skin radiance naturally. A team of scientists has explored the possibility of converting potato waste into valuable ingredients for skin care, which could add an innovative touch to future facial treatments. According to the Daily Mail, scientists stated that potato waste, such as stems and leaves that are discarded after harvest, contains active compounds used in cosmetics. Among the most prominent of these compounds is solanesol, responsible for the production of coenzyme Q10, as well as vitamin K2. Coenzyme Q10 is known for its antioxidant properties and ability to maintain healthy and youthful skin, while vitamin K2 contributes to collagen and calcium metabolism. Currently, cosmetic companies extract solanesol from tobacco plants, but the demand for this compound has increased significantly in recent decades. In this context, scientists from the University of Aberdeen project are studying the possibility of using potatoes as a local source of solanesol. If the project is successful, moisturizers and face masks could contain ingredients derived from potatoes. The Grampian Growers, a farmer-owned cooperative based on the east coast of Scotland, stated that the project is 'vitally important' for the potato industry. Professor Heather Wilson, Head of the Department of Immunology at the University of Aberdeen, added: 'Exploring the quality and yield of solanesol extracted from local potato peel and evaluating its applications in the cosmetics industry is an exciting and impactful research area.'
Potato and Skin Care Studies have shown that potato peel extract boosts collagen production, the protein responsible for skin elasticity and fighting wrinkles. Additionally, potatoes are used at home to treat issues like hyperpigmentation, dark circles, and acne. It is said that Japanese sweet potato helps soften wrinkles around the eyes when mashed and mixed with lemon juice. Sweet potato contains beta-carotene, which converts to vitamin A to protect the skin from UV rays, as well as vitamins C and E, which enhance collagen production and give the skin a radiant and healthy appearance.
