Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation Concludes Radioactive Materials Search Campaign

The Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation has finally concluded its annual campaign for the search and retrieval of radioactive materials in scrap metal and industrial areas. This is part of its ongoing efforts to protect the public, workers, and the environment from potential radiological hazards. In a statement issued yesterday, the Authority announced that in cooperation with several local government entities, the campaign team conducted field visits to a number of industrial sites across the state. This initiative is part of the Authority's continuous endeavor to enhance radiological safety in the scrap metal and recycling sector. The search and retrieval campaign focuses on the early detection of radioactive materials and their proper management, alongside promoting best practices and preventive measures in industrial facilities. The campaign also helps to raise the awareness of scrap traders on how to identify and handle radioactive materials upon discovery, ensuring the safe handling and proper management of retrieved sources, as well as encouraging the use of radiation detection devices to enhance early detection capabilities. Aida Al Shahi, Director of Radiation Safety at the Authority, stated: "This campaign reflects the proactive approach adopted by the Authority to ensure radiological safety and protect the public and the environment across all emirates of the UAE." She added: "Through continuous monitoring, coordination, and awareness, we work to ensure the detection, control, and safe management of radioactive materials in line with the highest international standards." Improper handling of radioactive materials and contaminated scrap metal outside regulatory control poses potential risks to workers, the public, and the environment. Radioactive materials embedded in equipment, aircraft parts, or industrial components may go unnoticed without adequate radiological scanning systems, increasing the likelihood of unintended radiation exposure or environmental contamination. The Authority emphasizes the importance of identifying radioactive sources when found and reporting them in accordance with the Radiation Protection from Orphan Sources strategy and international best practices to prevent their circulation and ensure their retrieval and safe management as radioactive waste. Licensees are also required to report any lost or disused sources to the Authority and refer to its relevant regulations.
