Record Global Weather Anomalies

January 2025 was the warmest on record, while Europe experienced extreme cold. The Southern Hemisphere simultaneously saw record heat, wildfires, and floods.

Record Global Weather Anomalies

January 2025 remains the warmest on record, being 28.0°C warmer than the average. In Europe, last January was the coldest since 2010, with an average temperature of -34.2°C, which is 63.1°C lower than the average recorded between 1991 and 2020. Other regions in the Northern Hemisphere also experienced extreme cold, including strong snowstorms in the United States at the end of the month. These cold waves were met worldwide with a record-breaking heatwave in the Southern Hemisphere, where large wildfires broke out in Australia and Chile, and severe floods occurred in South Africa. Despite the recent cold wave that swept most of the Northern Hemisphere, the European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service reported that last January was the fifth 'warmest' January on record globally. The average temperature for the month was 95.12°F, which is 51.0°F higher than the average recorded between 1991 and 2020.
