UAE Lowers Minimum Driving Age to 17

The Ministry of Interior has announced the implementation of new regulations aimed at providing young drivers a supervised environment to develop their road skills gradually. This initiative includes granting provisional driving licenses to 17-year-olds with specific restrictions until they turn 18. These guidelines mandate driving only during set hours and under particular weather conditions to ensure safety.

Violations of the provisional license conditions will result in fines and penalties. Repeated offenses could lead to the suspension of the provisional license along with compulsory attendance at driving safety courses. The introduction of this structured approach to driver education is designed to allow younger drivers in the UAE to gain practical experience in a controlled setting.

The new federal law, effective immediately, enables eligible teenagers to apply for a provisional driving license. Moreover, minor breaches, like driving beyond permitted hours, may incur fines starting at AED 500. More severe violations, such as reckless driving, can lead to fines reaching up to AED 2,000. In high-speed or congested areas, young drivers may need to have a licensed adult accompanying them.

In support of enhanced road safety, these changes reflect the UAE's dedication to promoting early driver education and accountability among its youth. The initiative emphasizes the importance of responsible driving practices and aims to create a safer environment for all road users.
