UAE Ministry Enforces Mobile Phone Ban in Schools

The Ministry of Education in the UAE has issued a directive mandating all public and private schools adhering to the national curriculum to implement strict measures for confiscating and securely storing mobile phones brought onto school premises by students. This decision is part of the Ministry's continuous efforts to enhance the educational environment, guarantee the safety and privacy of students and teachers, as well as diminish distractions in classrooms associated with mobile phone use.

According to the directive, schools are required to promptly confiscate any mobile phones discovered in the possession of students while within the school premises. It aims to cultivate positive student conduct and improve the overall quality of student life by fostering discipline and concentration during school hours. The Ministry hopes that students and parents will support and comply with this directive as it is in the best interest of the entire educational community.

Furthermore, schools are encouraged to conduct educational sessions to inform students about the adverse effects of mobile phone usage on their academic performance and focus. The Ministry is devoted to providing an optimal learning environment that is devoid of disruptions, enabling students to flourish in a disciplined and peaceful atmosphere. In cases where a student misuses a phone to record teachers or classmates without consent, further measures will be taken to protect the rights of those involved.

Parental cooperation is essential for the successful enforcement of this policy. The Ministry stressed the significance of parental involvement and cooperation. Initial violations will lead to a one-month confiscation of the device, while repeated offenses will result in the phone being retained until the end of the school year. This aims to instill respect for school regulations among students and ensure consistent application without exceptions.

To safeguard students' privacy, confiscated phones will not be searched or accessed for personal content, except under extraordinary circumstances and following strict procedures to uphold students' rights. The Ministry's objective is to encourage appropriate educational behavior among students and underscore the importance of discipline in the educational process. Parents will be informed of the confiscation and required to endorse a form to guarantee transparency and accountability throughout the process.

Schools are mandated to brief parents about the new policy, fostering effective collaboration between schools and families to ensure students adhere to the regulations. This initiative aligns with the student behavior code sanctioned by the Ministry. A specialized committee may be summoned for phone inspection if deemed necessary.
