In a historic achievement that enhances the leading position of the United Arab Emirates on the global tourism map, UAE's Sheikha Noura Al Nuaimi has been unanimously appointed as the Secretary-General of the United Nations World Tourism Organization for the period 2026-2029. This decision was made during the 26th session of the organization's General Assembly, held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from November 7-11. Sheikha Al Nuaimi was chosen unanimously by all 160+ participating member states.
This success follows her election by the organization's Executive Council in May. Thus, Sheikha Al Nuaimi becomes the first woman and the first Emirati to head the organization in its 50-year history. This decision reflects international confidence in Emirati capabilities and their role in shaping the future of global tourism.
Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy and Tourism of the UAE, stated: "Today we are at a historic turning point, not only for the United Arab Emirates, but for the entire Arab region and the global tourism sector as a whole. The selection of the first woman to lead the global tourism system is a landmark event." He emphasized that this achievement culminates the UAE's efforts in supporting and empowering women in leadership positions internationally.
Sheikha Al Nuaimi expressed her gratitude to all member states for their trust. She stated: "I firmly believe that tourism is not just an economic industry, but a bridge for human connection and a fundamental pillar for fostering understanding, peace, and sustainable development among peoples and cultures worldwide."
She said her vision for leading the global tourism system is to transform challenges into opportunities and to redesign tourism systems to meet the needs of local communities and boost national economies. She also confirmed the UAE's commitment to supporting the organization's programs and plans in the coming years, strengthening international partnerships in the tourism sector, and exchanging best global practices.
Sheikha Al Nuaimi said: "We will lead together – governments, organizations, private sector partners, and civil society – a new phase of collective work based on innovation, empowerment, and sustainability. We will strive to make tourism an inclusive sector that opens up opportunities for all, especially youth, women, and local communities."
