EU Condemns Musk for Criticism After 120 Million Euro Fine

The European Union condemned on Monday Elon Musk's attack on the bloc online after Brussels imposed a 120 million euro ($140 million) fine on his X platform. "This falls within the freedom of expression that we uphold, which allows for completely crazy statements," said EU spokeswoman Paula Bengho. In a comment on the fine, Musk posted on his X account: "The European Union should be abolished and sovereignty returned to the states, so that governments can better represent their peoples." He added in another post: "I love Europe, but not the bureaucratic monster that is the European Union." Following a high-level investigation that was seen as a test of the EU's resolve to pursue violations by major tech companies, a fine was imposed on the social media platform owned by the world's richest man on Friday for violating the bloc's digital rules. The administration of US President Donald Trump rushed to criticize the fine. Trump had tasked Musk with leading efforts to reduce the size of the federal workforce and cut spending before they fell out. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio called the fine "an attack on all American technology platforms and the American people."
